17th July update
Last week saw the formal handover of section one from the builder’s back to St John’s! Cornerstone Bookshop wasted no time in getting stuck into their relocation downstairs – which was a good thing as the Portakabin which housed the shop for the last year or so was craned off site on Wednesday evening! The security fence has been moved halfway down the terrace and shop area will soon reopen.
In other news, St John’s is organising its own festival cafe for the first time, which will be located just outside the church between the 3rd and 28th August! It will be serving a range of hot and cold drinks, paninis, sandwiches and snacks. Do come down and have a bite to eat enjoy the atmosphere and book a ticket to a show at the Just Festival while you’re at it! All proceeds go directly to the maintenance and upkeep of St John’s. We are also planning to have a selection of craft and food stalls on the lower terrace during the Festival, which will help draw the crowds back downstairs once again. More details on this will follow.
All the builder’s efforts have now turned to the remaining sections; the lift, new staircase, cafe, Hall extension and new mezzanine. The steel cage for the new lift is progressing well, while the mezzanine level is coming on in leaps and bounds as you can see from the photos below. The builders are preparing to crane in the new floor-to-ceiling glazing from Princes Street one evening this week (they do it then to minimise disruption to traffic) – we shall keep you posted! Enjoy the photos below and watch this space for further updates.
